Exclusive: Cappu Films has acquired world sales rights for Natalia Uvarova’s family drama MarikaThe world premiered at this year’s Busan International Film Festival.
The Hong Kong-based sales and distribution company secured a Kazakh film just before Busan and performed in the Vision Asia section. Cappu has launched its first consultation with buyers of ACFM, a market operating in parallel with the Korean festival. More will be featured on Tiffcom in Tokyo at the end of October. Cappu handles international sales except for Russia and CIS.
The film follows 12-year-old Marika. That carefree life shakes when Marika learns that her father will win her custody if her divorced mother Rosa leaves behind again, as Islamic traditions direct. Marika faces the dilemma of disrupting this new marriage and sacrificeing everything to ensure that her mother is happy.
The cast is led by Isabella Campieva in the title role, while Marena Karsieva plays her mother. He marks his debut as a feature director for Kazakhstan-based Ubarova. Ubarova also wrote the script with Milanamisieva.
It was filmed in locations in Kazakhstan, including Almaty, Issik Village, Lake Issik and Astana. This feature is produced by Artem Vasilyev, Ivan Golomovzyuk, Alexander Plotnikov and Pavel Doreuli.
Uvarova studied director at the St. Petersburg Film and Television Institute before working as the first assistant directors for acclaimed directors Aleksey German Jr. and Aleksey Mizgiryov. Her short A warm place It premiered in 2023 at a competition at Les Arcs.
Cappu was founded in 2018 by independent filmmaker Janice Woo and has offices in Hong Kong, Beijing and Los Angeles. The title slate includes action crime dramas Fox Huntstarring Tony Leon Chiu Wai and Olga Kurylenko.
