What’s the best way to express gratitude to your mother on Mother’s Day? A bouquet of her favorite flowers, a fresh bauble or a stunning scent are popular and well-received gifts. But if you really want to impress her, a tattoo in her honor will be a lasting reminder of your love. In fact, she might want to be in on it too. Giving mom a gift over brunch or afternoon tea is a popular way to mark the holiday, and TZR’s summer issue star Brooke Shields and Grier Hammond’s youngest daughter Henchy got matching tattoos.
The tattoo, which is placed on Henchy’s wrist and Shields’ forearm, depicts two pairs of feet (one petite, one huge) wearing the same pair of heels. It is meant to represent Henchy stepping into her mother’s shoes.
The duo also recorded an episode of Campbell’s podcast, Stupid things for love. During the interview, Shields talked about the behind-the-scenes of choosing her tattoo. “When she was little, she always wore my shoes, no matter how petite she was,” she said. “She would go into my closet, come out and eat breakfast in a diaper and high heels, and then in a nightgown and high heels.”
This isn’t the first mother-daughter tattoo in the Shields ink collection. In 2021, she and her oldest daughter, Rowan Francis Henchy, purchased matching ladybugs to commemorate her high school graduation. “A special graduation gift and memory with my girlfriend 🐞 I’m so proud of you, I love you more than words can express,” the model-actress wrote in her Instagram caption alongside a photo of her tattoos.
While family heirlooms are usually jewelry or china, as Shields and her daughters have shown, matching tattoos are a charming alternative tradition. (Although potentially painful.)
