They say inspiration comes from the most unexpected places. But who thought that the setting of public office could inspire something romantic?

Politicians in Spain, France, Austria or British used their own experiences to put romantic or sexual life on paper. Here is their story.

Think of this as a peek into a rather unexpected literary niche, not a reading list.

Thomas Overwriter, Ambassador of the European Union of Austria (2023-2025)

At the end of July, a story of a chin drop occurred in Brussels. The Austrian representative of the EU institution was accused of running the blog with very explicit content.

The blog, written from a woman’s perspective, includes scenes depicting sadomasochistic encounters, allegedly written by a 59-year-old male diplomat, and sometimes nonconsensual accounts of sexuality.

Despite Oberreiter’s denial of involvement in the blog, media investigations tracked posts to IP addresses and devices belonging to the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The blog was reportedly updated during working hours and within official facilities.

After more than 30 years as a European and Mexican diplomat, Oberator resigned after a controversy broke out in Brussels. He has not responded to requests for comment.

Remembering quotes (or you want to be forgotten): “We were meat, nothing more. Women. A container of male semen.”

Marlene Schiappa from the French government from 2017 to 2023.

Secretary of State for Gender Equality (2017-2020), Representative Minister for Citizenship (2020-2022), Secretary of State for Social and Solidarity Economy (2022-2023)

Long before he entered the Minister’s office, Marlene Siappa had already resorted to erotic writing under the name Pen. Marie Minnelli. It’s in her title Dare to be a sex friend, How to Turn Your Man into Brad Pitt in 30 Daysand Sex, lies, hot suburbs.

When the existence of these books was revealed when they were appointed Secretary of State for gender equality, she faced many attacks she described as sexist.

“I have a colleague in the government who is well known to have written novels. No one will tease him about it. No one mentions it. It’s normal. It’s a bit cheeky, but it’s okay, he’s a guy, he’s allowed,” she said.

Ultimately, she did not hide her past and defended these works as a way to challenge society’s views on women’s relationships with sexuality.

Schiappa is a prolific author. During her tenure, she published 11 books under her name and one through her “romantic” alter ego, Marie Minnelli.

She faces criticism not only for the time she spent writing, but also for the pose. Playboy magazine. When she appeared on the cover of the April 2023 issue, her then-boss Prime Minister Elisabeth Bourne reportedly called her, saying the interview was “inappropriate.”

Three months later, when the government was reshuffled, her name (and like Marie Minnelli’s name) quietly fell off the list.

Remember (or I wish you could forget): “I open my mouth as wide as possible, and Amalie cums out of control throughout my face, screaming in a high-pitched voice. Sex, lies, hot suburbs. Musardin.

Bruno Le Maier, Minister of Economy, Finance, Industry, Digital Sovereignty (2017-2024)

Another minister of the same government also published a book with erotic scenes.

In this almost 500-page novel, Le Maia tells the story of two brothers who visited Cuba in 1949 for a concert by pianist Vladimir Horowitz. It was not a musical reflection or a cultural conflict between the East and West, but a particularly clear passage involving a young man named Oscar who attracted the attention of the masses. The scene has been widely shared on social media, and has caused ock laughs online, especially given the tense political situation.

However, this was not Bruno Le Maia’s first time. In 2004 he published Ministera story based on his experiences as an advisor to the then Foreign Minister Dominique des Villepin. In it, he tells of an intimate moment with his wife.

Cleo Watson and Edwina Curry, UK

Cleo Watson, a former conservative political aide and special adviser to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, made headlines in his debut novel in 2023. Whip. The book blends Westminster plot with office romance and personal entanglement. The novel ranges from a secret romance between rival Tories and labor candidates encountered on dating apps, to the prime minister watching porn, and even a committee on which the Secretary of State questions while wearing a carefully vibrating device.

Cleo Watson was part of the “Party Gate” that led to the collapse of Boris Johnson, and was even fined for that. She then announced her follow-up in 2024. Cutting.

However, she was not the first to write an erotic book using the British political scene. Edwina Curry, a South Derbyshire Conservative Conservative MP from 1983 to 1997 and a Conservative MP for Health under Margaret Thatcher, also turned into fiction after leaving politics.
