They say inspiration comes from the most unexpected places. But who thought that the setting of public office could inspire something romantic?
Politicians in Spain, France, Austria or British used their own experiences to put romantic or sexual life on paper. Here is their story.
Think of this as a peek into a rather unexpected literary niche, not a reading list.
Thomas Overwriter, Ambassador of the European Union of Austria (2023-2025)
At the end of July, a story of a chin drop occurred in Brussels. The Austrian representative of the EU institution was accused of running the blog with very explicit content.
The blog, written from a woman’s perspective, includes scenes depicting sadomasochistic encounters, allegedly written by a 59-year-old male diplomat, and sometimes nonconsensual accounts of sexuality.
Despite Oberreiter’s denial of involvement in the blog, media investigations tracked posts to IP addresses and devices belonging to the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The blog was reportedly updated during working hours and within official facilities.

Another minister of the same government also published a book with erotic scenes.
Bruno Le Maia, who served as Minister of Economic Affairs since the election of Emmanuel Macron in 2017 and previously inaugurated under then-President Nicholas Sarkozy, is generally known for his serious and sophisticated attitude.

A famous figure from Esteban Gonza Respon, in the heart of Spain, served as the senator and is currently a member of the European Parliament. He is a vice-president of the Congress and a member of the Budget Committee, and is in a position in contrast to his side’s career as a romantic and erotic fiction writer.
