Microsoft founder Bill Gates doesn’t think the massive acceleration in user apply of artificial intelligence (AI) will impact the work of software engineers. In a conversation with Zerodha founder Nikhil Kamath on his podcast, Bill Gates outlined the transformative role of artificial intelligence and the benefits it can bring to humanity.
“The amazing thing about this technology is that we know it can aid in key areas and we know it can create educational teachers. We have seen several projects in India and the US that are producing great results. The potential is amazing if we knew all it would do was make jobs more productive,” said Bill Gates.
Bill Gates specifically addressed concerns about the role of software engineers in the future and called them “alarmists” because the importance of the type of work they do will continue to be significant. “We still need these software engineers because we won’t stop needing them,” the Microsoft founder added.
When asked whether artificial intelligence can replace every job, Bill Gates answered in an abstract way and presented how great this technology will be for older and disabled people. He also mentioned that AI technology has the potential to change and dismantle “the rules that structure society and what we value.”
However, he provided a timeline and said he didn’t see anything like this happening in the next 20 years. “Though I’m not sure about that,” Bill Gates said with a smile.
Capitalism versus socialism
Nikhil Kamath hosted the podcast in an engaging way, asking Bill Gates about his preferences on the capitalism vs. socialism debate. Microsoft’s CEO didn’t waste much time in choosing capitalism and explained his choice in detail.
“Capitalism gives you the freedom to start a up-to-date business or try a up-to-date product, and it is an idea of freedom because it is not based on background or class, and it also has the power of discovery,” he said.
