NEW DELHI: Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has congratulated Narendra Modi on his third consecutive term as India’s prime minister. Gates praised Modi’s efforts to position India as a hub for innovation across sectors including healthcare, agriculture, women-led development and digital transformation.
“Congratulations to Narendra Modi on winning his third term as Prime Minister. You have empowered India as a source of innovation driving global progress in sectors such as health, agriculture, women-led development and digital transformation. We look forward to continued partnership to improve the lives of people in India and around the world,” Gates wrote on his X timeline on Sunday, coinciding with Modi’s swearing-in ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan forecourt.
In March, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Modi and Gates engaged in a high-profile argument that attracted worldwide attention. The interaction, which launched to much fanfare, covered a range of topics from artificial intelligence (AI) to digital public infrastructure and climate change initiatives.
During a candid conversation at Modi’s residence, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of meeting the challenges posed by artificial intelligence. He stressed the need for initial watermarks on AI-generated content to prevent misinformation and escalate user awareness. Gates echoed Modi’s sentiments, acknowledging both the challenges and enormous opportunities presented by artificial intelligence technology.
Sunday’s oath-taking ceremony was a grand affair attended by dignitaries from India’s neighboring countries and the Indian Ocean region. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath to Modi, followed by other members of his ministerial team.
Narendra Modi, who has served as Prime Minister since 2014, is also the longest-serving Prime Minister of Gujarat, having served from October 2001 to May 2014. Under his leadership, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured its third consecutive victory in the last Lok Sabha elections.
The BJP won an absolute majority in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha polls, winning 282 and 303 seats respectively. In the current parliament, the NDA coalition holds 292 seats. Modi has pledged to transform India into a developed country by 2047.
Born on September 17, 1950 in a petite town in Gujarat, Modi’s family belonged to the “other backward class”, a marginalized section of society. He started his career with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh before entering politics, where he played a prominent role in the Bharatiya Janata Party at both the national and state levels.
As Modi begins his third term, the nation and the world eagerly watch how his policies and leadership will shape India’s future on the international stage.
