BENGALURU: A parent of a Class 9 student of an exclusive CBSE school in the city has lodged a complaint with the police cyber cell, alleging that artificial intelligence (AI)-generated nude photos of her daughter are being circulated on social media.
Photos of one other student in the same class were also morphed, although no complaint was filed on her behalf. The photos were first posted on an Instagram group chat. That group included about 20 classmates of the student whose parent filed the complaint Friday. Although the student herself did not take part in it, she was alerted by others.
Student suspects he is working at work, says there will be consequences
The student posted two photos on her Instagram account, one of which was used for morphing. Given that her account is private, she suspects it’s an inside job and the likely culprit is one of her friends.
An anonymous Instagram handle was used to publish the transformed photos. However, when some of the remaining students questioned the whereabouts of the account holder, the person went offline and has not posted anything since.
“I am very glad that a complaint has been filed and that there will be consequences,” the student said.
“The school is closed for the holidays. The parent went to the cyber cell and it was the right decision. We will treat this as a disciplinary matter and the school will support you every step of the way,” the principal said.
Dr. Manoj Sharma, professor in the department of clinical psychology at Nimhans, who also heads the SHUT clinic, said such cases are under-reported.
“Don’t share personal information. Be careful when building your social circle and sending photos. Social media users need to understand that even if they are careful, they are still at risk,” Dr. Sharma said.
