Russian missile and drone strikes hit Ukraine between Friday night and Saturday morning, killing at least four people and wounding dozens more, Ukrainian officials said.

Two people were killed and nine others were injured in a ballistic missile attack in the capital Kyiv early Saturday morning, the head of the Kyiv city’s military administration, Timur Tkachenko, announced.

Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said on the messaging app Telegram that a fire broke out in a non-residential building in one location, and in another, debris from an intercepted missile fell on an open field, damaging windows in a nearby building.

“An explosion in the capital. The city is under ballistic attack,” Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on Telegram during the onslaught.

Two people were killed and seven injured in the Dnipropetrovsk region, deputy regional governor Vladislav Khayvanenko said, adding that apartments, houses, outbuildings, shops and at least one vehicle were damaged in the airstrike.

Ukraine’s air force announced that Russia launched nine missiles and 62 drones, of which air defense forces intercepted four missiles and 50 drones.

In Russia, the country’s Ministry of Defense announced that its air defense forces shot down 121 Ukrainian drones over Russian skies overnight.

The attack came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Friday called on the United States to expand sanctions on Russian oil from just two companies to the entire industry and called for long-range missile launches to hit back at Russia.

President Zelenskiy was in London to meet with 20 European leaders who have pledged military aid to protect their countries from future Russian aggression if a cease-fire halts more than three years of war.

The meeting, hosted by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, was aimed at increasing pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and added momentum to recent measures, including new sanctions by the United States and European countries on Russia’s vital oil and gas export revenues.

The talks also discussed how to protect Ukraine’s power grid from Russia’s near-daily drone and missile attacks as winter approaches, how to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses and how to supply Kiev with long-range missiles capable of striking deep into Russia. President Zelenskiy has asked the United States to deploy Tomahawk missiles, which President Donald Trump is also considering.
