Amazon has announced a massive amount of £40 billion (€47.2 billion). According to the report, there will be investments in the UK over the next three years with the aim of opening four new warehouses and creating thousands of jobs across the country.

The online retail giant has confirmed that by 2027, two new fulfillment centres will open in East Midlands. The exact location of these future sites has not been revealed.

Warehouses aren’t the only plan for Amazon’s £4 billion. The company is as follows:

  • Expanding Shoreditch headquarters in East London with two new buildings
  • Upgrade your delivery station and transport infrastructure
  • Invest more in Berkshire’s Brayfilm Studio
  • Boost data centers, drone tech and prime streaming services
  • Strengthen staff wages and benefits

Much of the funds includes £8 billion (€93.8 billion) already allocated to UK data centres in 2024.

The UK economy’s “major victory”

Prime Minister Kiel Starmer welcomed the news, calling it “as a great place to do business, a massive vote of confidence in the UK.”

“It means thousands of new jobs. It’s a real opportunity for people in every corner of the country to build careers, learn new skills and support their families.” Sky News.

Prime Minister Rachel Reeves also said the investment was “a strong support of the UK’s economic strengths.”

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy emphasized that when Amazon invests, it focuses on expanding beyond capital that “when Amazon invests, it is not only in London and the southeast, but also brings innovation and job creation to communities in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.”

The company already employs around 75,000 people in the UK, making it one of the nation’s largest private employers.

Despite the scale of the investment, Amazon continues to face criticism. Regulators and unions have long raised concerns about the terms of Amazon warehouses. This is claimed to be denial by the company. This month, in France, Amazon was fined 32 million euros by Watchdog for using Secret Algorithm to monitor staff performance in the nearest seconds.
