Deepfake videos of many renowned figures have recently gained widespread attention on social media, sparking reactions among users.
In a recent incident, Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt has once again fallen victim to a counterfeit video. In this case, her face was digitally placed on the body of actress Wamiqi Gabbi.
This is the second such incident to happen to the actress after a November 2023 video was recorded in which her face was edited onto another woman’s. Other celebrities and politicians also fell victim to counterfeit videos.
What are deepfakes?
Deepfakes are altered and manipulated images or recordings created to falsely portray someone as doing or saying something they did not do or say.
In the recent counterfeit video featuring Alia Bhatt, the original video featuring Wamiqi Gabbi was posted last month on April 27 from her official Instagram account. Gabbi was last seen wearing the same saree at the Heeramandi show. Meanwhile, Alia Bhatt’s deepfake video was shared on May 4 by a user named unfixface.

Alia’s deepfake video that went viral received a lot of criticism from users. One user asked: “Is this legal? You operate Alia’s face.
“This is a real Wamiqi Gabi movie. They replaced it with Alia’s face using artificial intelligence,” added another.
“How is this possible,” one user commented. “She looks like Alia, but,” the user added.
