On Monday night, Alex Ovechkin scored two goals for the Capitals.
Ovechkin currently scores 868 NHL goals, with just 26 points from the legendary Gretzky, who won a career with record 894.
Greetzky’s record has approached for Ovechkin in every game he plays, and he scored 15 goals for the Capitals in the first 18 games of the year.

The Russian has scored a record-breaking score pace this year, and if the injury isn’t at 39, he’s on track to break Gretzky’s goals record this season.
However, after scoring two more points against Utah on Monday, Ovechkin faced injuries as he was involved in a violent collision with Jack McBane, who saw a knee crash.
Ovechkin quickly left the ice after shaking his knees at McBain and went straight down the tunnel without returning to the game.
Ovechkin didn’t talk to reporters after his injury, but Capitals head coach Spencer Carverly talked about the type of leader he is a player and how much he will be missed while he is injured.

“He’s been incredible this year, leading our team with Charge, not just in the leadership perspective and in the locker room, but also on the ice,” Carberry said. “When you need these types of games, you need to step up and score, or play big, and he keeps doing that.”
The capital will face Colorado on Thursday night, but their top scorer is unlikely to feature after the nasty knock he picked up on Monday.
