A panel of international researchers and practitioners will discuss roads where the film industry deals with artificial intelligence and its implications for the near future at the Cannes UK Pavilion on Sunday, May 18th.
The discussion will be led by David Defendi, a writer, screenwriter and film director, founder of French Genario, an artificial intelligence platform dedicated to writing and literature. Katharina Gellein Viken is a pioneer in AI-led filmmaking. Graham Jack is Chief Technology Officer of Belofx, a visual effects and technology company operating in Canada, the UK and India. Rachel Lyske is a leader in the field of AI-based music.
“I believe that AI should not be a weapon for integration, it should be a tool for release,” Defendi said. “Auteur films, experimental forms, radical stories – these are not killed by AI. They are killed by fear, rising costs, and creative paralysis of big studios and television networks. AI can break that grip.
“But let’s be clear. This is not just a technological revolution. It’s a cultural and political battle. And one frontline is copyright. What opens to the rights of creators is scandal. At Genario, we chose a different path.
“I hope this panel brings nuance to the conversation and doesn’t just framing AI as inherently good or bad,” added Belofx’s Jack. In my experience, creative industries, especially visual effects, have always been defined by the combination of creative and technical people who find solutions to storytelling problems by embracing new technologies. It clearly sees technology with unprecedented change potential.
