AI-generated content officially won its place on Hollywood’s biggest night.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science confirms that films using Artificial Intelligence (AI) remain eligible to win an Oscar. New rules announced on April 15, 2025 make it clear that AI use does not “help or harm” a film’s chances of winning.

The announcement follows months of discussion about AI’s growing role in the entertainment industry after several films using AI tools received the highest honors at the Oscars in March.

AI tools to replace human creativity?

The Academy confirmed that films using generator AI are allowed to compete, but emphasized that “human involvement” remains an important consideration in determining the winner of the award. According to a statement shared by the Academy, eligibility is based on how humans were central to the creative author of the work.

The updated rules were created in collaboration with the Academy’s Science and Technology Council and are part of a wide range of changes to the voting and campaign process.

Other updates include new and very surprising requirements. Voting members must watch all nominated films in categories before casting the final vote. It seems strange that this wasn’t a previous requirement!

Recent award-winning film AI

The use of AI in filmmaking attracted a lot of attention this year when Adrien Brody won Best Actor. A brutal personA film that uses AI generated to refine Hungarian accents. The film has received 10 nominations in total, attracting both praise and criticism.

These technologies allow for quick stylistic editing, from accent changes to appearance changes. These tools are becoming more and more common in music and film production, but not everyone is on sale.

Artists are paying attention to the growing influence of AI

Many creatives are cautious about expanding the role of AI. During the 2023 Hollywood strike, the actors and writers expressed concern about unemployment and the possibility of misuse of imagery.

“If you can take my face, my body, my voice and say or make me do something I’ve never chosen, that’s not a good thing,” actress Susan Sarandon said. BBC. Another Hollywood actress, Cate Blanchett, also expressed her concerns BBC. She said, “AI advancements can be completely replaced by anyone. Forget whether they are actors or not.” She also called the AI ”incredibly destructive” and “we were worried about us as a seed.” Some celebrities oppose the unlicensed use of AI works. Over 11,500 artists, writers and musicians have signed a statement condemning the use of unlicensed creative work in AI training, describing it as a “major, unjust threat.”

Similarly, screenwriters are worried that Studios could rely on tools like ChatGpt to reduce costs and replace human writers in the early stages of script development. These concerns were addressed in union agreements that helped end the strike.

Even some animators have dismissed the creative abilities of AI. I’ll talk to you BBC“It’s like a bad writer helps you. If you need something that requires emotional weight, AI won’t get an Oscar,” said Jonathan Kendrick, co-founder of streaming service Rokit Flix.
