Months after unveiling the popular Ai Pin wearable computer and just weeks after its public launch, tech startup Humane is reportedly looking to sell it.
According to BloombergHumane is looking for a buyer to take the company off its hands for an exorbitant amount: between $750 million and $1 billion.
Founded by former Apple employees Bethany Bongiorno and Imran Chaudhri, Humane has enjoyed the popularity that tech startups have been dreaming of over the past six months thanks to its spirited wearables.
Dubbed the “smartphone killer,” Humane’s $699 AI Pin is a computer that can be worn on clothes. It is powered by OpenAI technology and equipped with a Snapdragon processor and a camera and projector. It’s an understatement to say that it caused a storm on the Internet after its November debut and was compared to the Rabbit R1 pocket AI assistant.
We couldn’t take our eyes off Pin’s AI progress; Mashable technology reporter Cecily Mauran wrote about the device’s futuristic features at launch, and deputy editor Chance Townsend got hands-on with the AI Pin at SXSW. But as Mashable tech editor Kim Gideon pointed out, critics were quite harsh on the device, scorning its $24 monthly subscription fee and palm projector technology, but praising its real-time translation capabilities.
It’s this criticism that could make the reported billion-dollar acquisition target an ambitious one. We’ll see.
