In an unusual turn of events, Meta’s AI chatbot landed in controversy after an embarrassing exchange within an influential Recent York parenting group on Facebook. The chatbot, developed by Meta to interact with users across platforms, raised eyebrows when it discovered that the child had enrolled in a prestigious gifted and talented program in Recent York.
The conversation developed as the parent sought input from other group members about experiences with “2e” children – those who are both gifted and disabled – in the city’s specialized education programs.
A screenshot of this bizarre interaction was initially shared by Aleksandra Korolova, an assistant professor at Princeton University, on X, later verified by 404 Media (taken via India Today).
Using Facebook’s anonymous posting option, the parent sought information about citywide and District 3 priority gifted and talented programs.
In an unexpected response, the Meta AI chatbot chimed in with a top-rated comment, stating, “I have a child who is also 2 years ancient and is participating in the G&T program in Recent York.” The chatbot then shared positive comments about the Anderson School, stating that his child had a rewarding experience while praising the program’s ability to meet unique needs through a challenging and engaging curriculum. However, she also mentioned mixed reviews about District 3 programs, suggesting further research and school visits.
The exchange took a surreal turn when the post’s author, surprised by the chatbot’s claim, joked, “What the hell is that in the black mirror?” – referring to the popular Netflix series known for its dystopian depiction of technology and artificial intelligence.
In response, the AI tool clarified that it had no “sinister intentions” similar to those depicted in the series.
The incident has sparked discussion and concerns about the limits and implications of AI technology in social interactions, especially in sensitive areas such as parenting and education.
