Kate Winslet recalls filming the ‘I’m Flying’ scene in Titanic with Leonardo DiCaprio, but admitted that “not everything was as it seemed.”
Rewatching some of her most iconic scenes in the movie with Vanity fairthe Oscar winner recalls the sequence in which her character Rose kisses Jack DiCaprio was much sloppier than fans realized.
“My God, he’s quite the romantic, isn’t he? “No wonder every newborn girl in the world wanted Leonardo DiCaprio to kiss her,” Winslet joked. “It wasn’t everything that was imagined.”
Regime Star explained: “We kept kissing and I had a lot of delicate makeup on and I had to check my makeup – on both of us, between takes – and it looked like I was sucking on a caramel chocolate bar after every sip because his makeup was rubbing off on me.”
And because of the remnants of the lighter makeup, she said DiCaprio looked like he was “a little missing his face,” adding: “Oh God, that was a mess.”
Rewatching the scene, Winslet described this particular shoot as a “nightmare” due to lighting issues and the inaccessibility of the filming location to the makeup crew. The actress also recalled that she had to film several takes because she kept hitting her knee on the railing.
“Leo couldn’t stop laughing, so we had to shoot it four more times [director James Cameron] of course, she needed a very specific delicate for this, and the sunsets were constantly changing where we were,” she recalled of the hectic experience.
“It was part of the ship, not part of the whole ship set that we had,” Winslet continued. “We had to climb a ladder to get there. Hair and makeup couldn’t get to us. Now what you may not know, because Leo looks completely natural, but he had to lie on sun loungers and there is a lot of make-up around him with a fraudulent tan.”
The Avatar: Way of Water the actress added that she even had “his makeup and brushes and sponge and my makeup and brushes and sponge” hidden in parts of her dress, “and between takes I was basically touching up our makeup,” which was “pretty fun.”
Although filming had some rocky moments, the 1997 film was a huge success, winning 11 Oscars, including Best Picture.
“I’m very proud of it because I feel like it’s that movie that just gives,” Winslet added. “Entire generations of people are discovering this film or watching it for the first time, and there is something special about it.”
