Alpine The F1 team has officially announced its departure Esteban Ocon at the end of the current Formula 1 season, after signing a contract with the French driver. This marks the end of Ocon’s significant five-year tenure with the team, highlighted by a historic victory at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix, which was both his and Alpine’s first Grand Prix win.
Ocon’s time at Alpine produced several notable accomplishments. He scored his first podium in Formula 1, finishing second in the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix. He scored another podium this season, finishing third in the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix. His best overall performance in the Drivers’ Championship came in 2022 when he finished eighth, helping Alpine secure fourth place in the Constructors’ Championship.
The announcement of Ocon’s departure comes shortly after a challenging race weekend in Monaco, where an early collision with teammate Pierre Gasly led to a five-place grid penalty in the upcoming race Canadian Grand Prix. Despite this defeat, Ocon remains focused on the rest of the season.
In a heartfelt statement, Ocon reflects on his time with Alpine: “Racing for this team in Formula 1 was a significant time in my life. Although I have been working here for five years as a full-time racing driver, my professional career began at Enstone when I was a teenager, so it will always be a special place to me.”
Ocon expressed his gratitude for the support and experiences he has gained with the team, and also hinted at future plans that have yet to be revealed. “We have had some great moments together, but also some complex moments, and I am certainly grateful to everyone in the team for these unforgettable moments. I will announce my plans soon, but in the meantime I am fully focused on pursuing the right path for this team and a successful rest of the season.”
Alpine team principal Bruno Famin also expressed his appreciation for Ocon’s contribution and commitment: “First of all, we would like to thank Esteban for his commitment to the team over the last five years. During his time we experienced some fantastic moments together, the best of which took place at 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix with an unforgettable race victory.”
Famin highlighted the team’s current goals for the current season: “We still have 16 races to complete in 2024 and we have a clear goal: to work tirelessly for the team to achieve the best results on the track. We wish Esteban all the best and all the best for the next chapter of his driving career when that moment comes.”
