Apple has added another artificial intelligence company to its portfolio as it continues to advance artificial intelligence technology.
Takeover of the iPhone and Macbook manufacturer DarwinAIWaterloo, Ontario-based artificial intelligence startup earlier this year with dozens of employees joining Apple’s AI division Bloomberg reported. The Canadian company has developed artificial intelligence technology to visually inspect components during production. It is also advanced technology was intended to make artificial intelligence systems smaller and faster.
“This technology is likely to be implemented across Apple’s supply chain, which is a common approach Apple uses to augment the efficiency of component manufacturers,” Gene Munster, managing partner at Deepwater Asset Management, wrote on X
DarwinAI had raised over $15 million according to the Canadian startup community Communitech in delayed 2022. The startup collaborated with Intel and LockheedMartin, among other partners. Alexander Wong, co-founder of DarwinAI and professor at the University of University of Waterloojoined Apple to lead its AI group, according to Bloomberg.
Apple and Wong did not immediately respond to Quartz’s requests for comment.
DarwinAI is the latest artificial intelligence startup that Apple has acquired in recent years. Since 2017, a technology giant based in Cupertino, California is a major buyer of artificial intelligence and machine learning companiesbuying almost twice as much as Microsoft and Meta.
Despite the acquisitions, Apple must catch up in the generative AI race, while OpenAI, Google and Microsoft are rapidly developing their own offerings. Apple CEO Tim Cook promised “break modern ground” on Generative Artificial Intelligence. The company is reportedly testing artificial intelligence features in its iOS 18 i software software used in internal operations.
“In terms of generative AI, which I think you’re focused on, we have a lot of work to do internally, as I mentioned earlier.” Cook told a group of investors and analysts on February 1. “[W]We have a few things we’re incredibly excited about that we’ll be talking about later this year.
