Thiruvananthapuram: With the introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) teaching in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) textbook for Class VII, over 4 lakh students in Kerala are set to learn about Artificial Intelligence in the coming academic year. In one of the activities within the program, in the “Computer Vision” chapter, students will create their own AI program that recognizes human facial expressions. This program will be able to identify up to seven different emotions on a person’s face. “For the first time in India, all students in a classroom have the opportunity to learn AI uniformly,” said K Anvar Sadath, chairman of the ICT Textbook Committee and CEO of KITE. ‘PictoBlox’ package along with ‘Scratch’ software that teaches visual programming has been introduced in the textbooks to enable students to practice programming, artificial intelligence, robotics etc. Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE), the technology wing of the general education department, will provide all necessary Additionally, the software is located on laptops located in schools. The up-to-date ICT textbooks for grades 1 and 3 include FOSS (free open source software)-based learning applications such as GCompris, eduActiv8, OmniTux and TuxPaint that enable drawing, reading, language learning, numeracy, operations and rhythm. In addition, the ICT manual also includes applications developed by KITE, such as Traffic Signal – thanks to which children learn the rules of road traffic and Waste Challenge – teaching waste disposal in game mode. Moreover, the up-to-date textbooks also include language laboratories. “The up-to-date ICT textbooks present practical ICT activities that develop life skills while also supporting learning in other subjects and providing tips on cyber security and identifying bogus news,” Anvar said. From May 2 this year KITE has started AI training for 80,000 secondary school teachers and so far 20,120 teachers have completed the training.
