NEW DELHI: An app to block caller ID and spam communications Truecaller has launched an ‘AI call scanner’ feature that enables users to distinguish between human voices and AI-synthesized voices, which will further lend a hand them protect themselves against potential scams and scams.
Truecaller said that the AI voice synthesizer only needs three and three seconds to generate a complete voice clone. “Illegal voice cloning and speech synthesis technologies are developing at an unpredictable rate of change and, unfortunately, are already commoditized and ubiquitous,” it said.
According to Truecaller, the next wave of AI scams will prey on “the most vulnerable side of the psyche – the threat to our loved ones in danger.”
The AI call scanner is built into the Truecaller Android app and is part of the Premium subscription. It will be rolled out first in the US, followed by India and other leading Truecaller markets.
If a person receives a suspicious call, they can tap a dedicated button on the Truecaller interface, after which the caller’s voice will be recorded and this voice sample will then be processed by the company’s advanced artificial intelligence model, which has been rigorously trained to identify the call’s unique characteristics from human speech and distinguish it from voices generated by artificial intelligence.

“The risk of AI voice fraud is increasing due to the proliferation of AI voice synthesizers. Our goal was to find an effective and reliable solution before things got out of control. I am proud to announce that Truecaller is a worldwide calling app with built-in AI voice detection feature. Truecaller already uses artificial intelligence in a number of different ways, and this was a logical and much-needed extension of Truecaller’s anti-fraud capabilities,” said Alan Mamedi, CEO and founding co-owner at Truecaller.
Truecaller is also exploring the imminent launch of this feature on iOS.
The Swedish company said it is exploring ways to improve the accuracy of its artificial intelligence model, improve response times and adapt to emerging trends in voice synthesis technology.
Additionally, it is considering the potential integration of AI Call Scanner with other communication platforms and devices to expand its reach and impact; for example, building a chatbot that people can utilize to forward recorded clips for detection.
