Truecaller on Wednesday introduced an AI call scanner that is trained to detect and distinguish human voices from AI-synthesized voices in a bid to curb spam and fraud. It will only be available to Truecaller Premium Android users.
Truecaller is rolling out the feature first to the US, followed by India and other markets.
According to Truecaller, if a person receives a suspicious call, he or she will click on a dedicated button on the Truecaller interface. The caller’s voice is recorded and the voice sample is then processed by the AI model, distinguishing human speech from AI-generated voices.
“The risk of AI voice fraud is increasing due to the proliferation of AI voice synthesizers. Our goal was to find an effective and reliable solution before things got out of control. I am proud to announce that Truecaller is a worldwide calling app with built-in AI voice detection feature. Truecaller already uses artificial intelligence in a number of different ways, and this was a logical and much-needed extension of Truecaller’s anti-fraud capabilities,” said Alan Mamedi, CEO and Co-Founder at Truecaller.

While AI Call Scanner will launch first on Android, we are already exploring opportunities for further improvements and extensions, including the imminent launch of iOS, Mamedi added.
“Our team is actively exploring ways to improve the accuracy of the AI model, improve response times and adapt to emerging trends in voice synthesis technology,” he said.
Additionally, Truecaller is also considering potential integration of its AI call scanner with other communication platforms and devices to expand its reach and impact; like building a chatbot that people can utilize to forward recorded clips for detection.
