Modern Delhi:
Movie from 2002 Devdas, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s best film to date, still holds a special place in the hearts of audiences. The film starred Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit who delivered brilliant performances. Now in a fresh interview with Bollywood Hungama, the director talked about the excellent acting of the actors in this film and that such an acting technique can be a challenge for contemporary artists. In an interview, when the director was asked about his thoughts on the evolution of the acting process over the years, he said: “I think that cinema has changed, the technique has changed. Now the director looks at cinema differently. Screenwriters write differently and sketch diverse and unusual roles. It’s a great time for Indian cinema. Today, great films are being made and great work is being done.”
He continued: “The sur (tone) and the note at which Devdas it was performed, it was high and operatic… it was tough to perform. Back then, directors expected actors to be like that, but today they require actors to be minimal and subtle, which is also nice. What did Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Madhuri Dixit and Kirron Kher do in Devdasit was the comments and the confidence that today’s actors might not be able to achieve it because it was a bit unrealistic and required a deeper understanding of acting techniques, which Shah Rukh handled brilliantly.”
Devdas is based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s 1917 novel of the same name.
After a great success Constitutionthe director is now preparing to shoot for his next film Love and war, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal. The film’s premiere is scheduled for December 2025.
