Being a tech journalist means signing up to a lot of different apps and digital services to keep an eye on them. Sometimes I wonder if I changed jobs, what subscriptions would I keep? One thing is clear to me: YouTube Premium he would be the last one I would abandon.
It’s certainly not the cheapest subscription on the market: students pay $7.99 per month, individuals pay $13.99 per month, and families of up to five people can pay $22.99 per month for everything YouTube Premium offers. It’s a lot of money, but for me it’s more than worth it.
No ads
I understand why paying for YouTube seems like a waste of money when you can apply it for free with ads, but those ads make a huge difference. The more you apply YouTube, the more of a difference it makes.
Now watching YouTube when I’m logged out or when someone is showing me something is a painful experience for me. How can you stand it? Video playlists are always interrupted and you always have to click or tap to skip ads. Not to mention the ads that appear in the sidebar.
Your all-day relaxation mixes won’t be interrupted by commercials.

With Premium, you can seamlessly queue up playlists and go down YouTube rabbit holes, and if you watch a lot of videos, the time you save adds up quickly. You can apply all that extra time to… watch more movies.
We all have different tolerance levels when it comes to ads – many people seem elated to pay less for Netflix in exchange for watching some ads – but in my opinion it’s worth paying to get rid of them permanently.
Downloading videos
If getting rid of ads doesn’t tempt you, maybe it’s the ability to download videos. Downloading videos means you can still apply YouTube offline, so whether you’re boarding a plane or heading to a remote cottage, you can still catch up on your favorite channels.
This works on mobile devices and the web, although it’s worth remembering that the videos are locked to the YouTube app or web browser: for obvious reasons, you can’t download YouTube videos into MP4 files ready to forward to someone else.
YouTube Premium can even select which videos to download.

If you’re not sure what you want to watch, YouTube can even automatically download videos if you want. These downloads will be based on your recommendations and subscriptions, so you’ll never be caught missing something to watch offline.
YouTube Music Premium
Y YouTube Premium includes YouTube Music Premium. Cancel your Spotify subscription – currently $10.99 per month for individuals – and you’ll almost pay for YouTube Premium.
YouTube Music Premium doesn’t yet have the feature set or polish of Spotify or Apple Music, but it’s close and covers all the key features. There are downloads, there are radio stations, there are podcasts, there is an annual summary and much more.

With YouTube Music Premium, you have access to everything on YouTube – an almost limitless collection of live performances, remixes and rarities. Yes, the original cassette recording of REM’s first single, the Mitch Easter version is therefor those who were wondering (sorry if you have to sit through a commercial to listen to it).
There are other benefits as well, including the ability to watch YouTube videos on your phone while using other apps. You can currently try YouTube Premium for free for one month.
