ChatGPT may soon remember what you say between conversations. OpenAI announced earlier this week that it is experimenting with a form of “long-term” memory for its AI chatbot that should allow it to recall things between interactions.
This feature is currently only available to a miniature number of ChatGPT users, but OpenAI claims that it will be able to remember things like whether you prefer your meeting notes summarized in a certain way, or whether you told ChatGPT that you own a local store. He will then be able to remember this information and operate it to provide better answers when you ask him a specific question.
One nice thing about this upcoming feature is that OpenAI puts a lot of control in the hands of users. You will be able to control ChatGPT personalization settings from the Settings > Personalization > Storage page. Once you disable ChatGPT, it won’t remember things you forbid it to do. You’ll also be able to view and delete specific memories or clear them all in one action.

OpenAI’s goal is for memories in ChatGPT to evolve with your interactions, without tying them to specific conversations. Deleting an older chat also won’t erase the memories ChatGPT has of it, so those of us who like cleaner chats won’t have to worry about keeping aged conversations around for too long.
If you like having storage enabled but want to have a ChatGPT conversation that doesn’t record anything, you can also operate what OpenAI calls staging chat, which is sort of the equivalent of an incognito window. This chat will not appear in your history, will not operate memory, and will not be used to train any of the OpenAI models.
You can also customize ChatGPT memory even further by setting custom instructions on how much you want it to know about you and even how you want it to respond. OpenAI says it provides users with this control to ensure privacy and security standards keep pace with ChatGPT’s advancements.
Please note that various ChatGPT plugins may also affect how your information is used, so you must always keep this in mind.
