A brand based in the USA Stellar and Chinese electric vehicle startup Leapmotor announced on Tuesday the formation of a joint venture called Leapmotor International, in which Stellantis holds a 51% stake. The aim of the project is to expand sales of Leapmotor electric vehicles outside China and establishes production plants abroad, using the capabilities of Stellantis production possibilities. This partnership follows Stellantis’ acquisition of a 21% stake in Stepping engine for $1.6 billion last year, signaling broader cooperation between the two groups.
Stellantis-Leap engine JV intends to start shipping cars to nine European countries, including France and Germany, from September. Following the initial launch, the electric vehicles will be rolled out to markets in the Middle East, Africa, India, Asia-Pacific and South America later this year. In India, the JV will commence operations in the fourth quarter of 2024.
