CHENNAI: Agnes Rita, principal of GRT Mahalakshmi Vidhyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Ashok Nagar, Chennai, said, “Last year, more students were interested in the commerce group in our school. With the popularity of artificial intelligence and data analytics, more students prefer the computer science and mathematics group this year.” Groups such as pristine science also have fewer takers this year.
J Lydia Jerlin, a student of a city school who scored 495 out of 500 in class X, chose the IT group. “I’m interested in learning about artificial intelligence,” she said.
D. Harini, who secured 489 out of 500 marks in Class X in a city school, says she chose the IT batch as it offers more job opportunities.
“Most of my classmates are also interested in computer science. They want a career in robotics and artificial intelligence,” she said.
Sweetlyn, a computer science teacher at a city school, says artificial intelligence tools like “ChatGPT” have attracted more students to computer science.
“During Covid-19, all the best in our school chose the trade industry. Last year, there was a competition between groups dealing with commerce and IT.
Now all the best ones want to join the IT batch,” said N Vijayan, chairman of Zion Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Tambaram.
In government schools, due to 7.5% special reservation in engineering schools, students have been preferring computer science for the last two years.
“Our students get into top universities and the government pays their fees. So, we expect the same trend this year too,” said Padmaja R, principal of Chennai Girls Higher Secondary School, Saidapet.

The confusion around artificial intelligence has made computer science with mathematics the most sought-after class of students in class XI in schools this year. Some schools in Chennai are planning to open more sections to meet the demand, while others are advising their top students to join biology and mathematics groups.
After the pandemic, toppers opted for commerce in class XI due to fear of mathematics. Now, there has been a shift due to the popularity of generative AI tools such as ChatGPT. Higher scores in Mathematics in Class X have given students confidence in choosing the subject in Class XI. Around 60% of class X students want to join computer science in class XI this year, said M Sathish Kumar, director of Vana Vani Matriculation HSS at IIT-M campus. “We are trying to convince students with lower scores to join the biology and mathematics group this year,” he added.
