In a world where romance is becoming more and more digital, Babble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd believes artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionize the way people connect online. In a speech at the Bloomberg Technology Summit on Thursday, Wolfe Herd discussed the potential of artificial intelligence to streamline the dating process and facilitate build healthier relationships.
“In the near future, you could be talking to your AI-powered dating concierge,” Wolfe Herd said. “You can share your insecurities, and that can give you productive tips for communicating with other people.”
But Wolfe Herd’s vision goes beyond just offering dating advice. He imagines a future in which artificial intelligence takes the lead in the initial stages of courtship, essentially “dating” on users’ behalf.
“If you want to really get outside, there is a world where your [AI] a dating concierge could set you up on dates with other dating concierges,” Wolfe Herd said, drawing chuckles from the audience. “NO. NO. Really. And then you won’t have to talk to 600 people. He could search all of San Francisco for you and say, “These are three people you really should meet.”
The idea of artificial intelligence taking care of the tedious online dating switching is not fresh. Tools like YourMove.AI and Love Genius are already using AI to create more intriguing bios and dating messages. However, Bumble’s potential exploit of artificial intelligence takes this concept to a fresh level.
“This is the power of artificial intelligence if used properly,” said Wolfe Herd.
The Bumble founder’s comments come as many singles feel burned out by the endless swiping and messaging that characterizes current dating apps. According to a recent Pew Research Center survey, nearly half of Americans have had a negative experience with online dating.
Wolfe Herd believes artificial intelligence can facilitate alleviate dating fatigue by taking on the initial work of meeting potential partners. This technology can analyze user profiles, conduct initial conversations and ultimately present users with a curated selection of compatible partners.
However, not everyone likes the idea of using artificial intelligence to play matchmaker. Some compare it to dystopian scenarios depicted in shows like “Black Mirror”, while others fear that relying on artificial intelligence in dating could deepen feelings of isolation and loneliness.
Despite these concerns, Wolfe Herd remains hopeful about AI’s potential to change the dating landscape. He believes that by using technology responsibly, Bumble can facilitate create more meaningful connections and empower users in their search for love.
