For twenty years Porsche 911 GT3 RS models were considered is the benchmark when it comes to street-legal versions of racing cars. Every generation finds a way to do this in some way drive faster on the race track. Aerodynamics, power, tires, suspension and technical adjustments ensure the most hardcore version 911 closer to tracking the advantage. Each fresh version delivers significant improvements in track-proven lap times, but is it always a better car?
YouTube’s Vin Anatra recently went to the Porsche Experience Center in the middle of Los Angeles to test this theory. He brought with him a slightly modified version of the 997-generation GT3 RS, a car he calls his all-time favorite, to compare it to the newest and craziest car in the Porsche stable, the 992-generation GT3 RS. They are completely different cars that approach speed in very different ways . Before you watch the movie, consider which one you would prefer to have.

OK, now that you’ve seen it, has your opinion changed? I know mine doesn’t. I’ve spent a lot of time in many 911s, and the 997 remains my favorite. The later 991 and 992 models appear much larger and more video game-like. Even on the track, Vin comments that the 992 – with its PDK gearbox, launch control, track modes, downforce control arms and everything electronically controlled – “feels like it’s doing everything for you, not for you, but it’s so assertive.”
Porsche definitely knows what they’re doing when they build these cars, as they become more and more popular and more steep every year. That said, I will always gravitate towards a car that demands more from the driver. I want three pedals, sawing at the wheel and full-on straight-line braking that 911s have always been famed for. I want something that turns the sport into a sports car. I don’t pay much attention to lap times, I just want to hear the clatter of the clutch.
What do you think? Which 911 GT3 RS are you taking home?
