Trichy: Days after the declaration of Class XII board exam results, arts and sciences colleges in Trichy have recorded high demand for bachelor’s degree programs in commerce and artificial intelligence (AI). In response to demand, universities have introduced modern programs in these fields. Some seats have been reserved for CBSE students. Among the seats earmarked for state government students, universities have almost reached maximum capacity in trade programs. “Corporations are looking for graduates with specialized trade skills. To meet this demand, we have introduced two modern programs: BCom Business Analytics and BCom Strategic Finance, which contain elements of artificial intelligence. Industry experts will collaborate in developing the curriculum,” said Alexander Pravin Durai, head of commerce, St Joseph’s College, Trichy. Last year at St Joseph’s College, almost 80% of commerce graduates found employment on campus, while others continued their studies. Sectors such as information technology (IT), fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), FinTech and banking are actively looking for qualified trade graduates. Some students opt for bachelor’s commerce programs to prepare for competitive exams like TNPSC and banking exams, he said. “As commerce remains a popular choice, we have implemented stringent admission criteria,” noted S. Senthamarai, dean of the Faculty of Management Studies at Holy Cross College. “With AI emerging as a key sector, high-achieving students are increasingly turning to AI to explore the field of data science,” he said. This academic year, the university introduced a bachelor’s program in artificial intelligence. City universities report that about 80% of seats in commerce and artificial intelligence fields have been filled. In addition, programs in computer science, environmental sciences and nutrition and dietetics are very popular among students. “Students prefer nutrition and dietetics to pursue a career in the healthcare sector,” noted A Pappa, assistant professor at AIMAN Arts and Science College for Women, Trichy. “Many people choose postgraduate studies to escalate their chances of employment in leading hospitals.” – Pappa said. Meanwhile, at a career counseling program conducted at Kalaiarangam Hall in Trichy, District Collector M. Pradeep Kumar said that banks have been directed to provide education loans to all eligible applicants.
