MIAMI – Continuing the same form he showed throughout the weekend, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen takes pole position at the Miami Grand Prix. With a time of 1:27.241, he is just over one tenth faster than Charles Leclerc, who, just like in the sprint, starts from second position.
Miami fan favorite Sergio Perez managed to finish fourth and round out the first two rows. Daniel Ricciardo may have been the talk of the paddock after the sprint, but just hours later he was knocked out in Q1 and would end up starting from last position thanks to a three-place grid penalty. The Racing Bulls driver will have to put in a lot of work tomorrow for his car to score points like it did today.
Neither McLaren, with their improvements, would be able to climb the ladder high enough to knock off Red Bull or Ferrari, but at least they will start side-by-side in fifth and sixth. Nico Hulkenberg continued Haas’ robust weekend by finishing ninth in qualifying, although teammate Kevin Magnussen was not so lucky and finished 19th. Moreover, Magnussen’s driving style – fighting with Hamilton in a sprint – which caught the attention of stewards, could have resulted in him facing further penalties.
Fernando Alonso has had a destitute weekend so far and continued to qualify, with his teammate Lance Stroll passing him in qualifying in 11th place compared to Alonso’s 15th place. Logan Sargeant from Florida was also disappointing as he was knocked out in Q1. Teammate Alex Albon managed to place his Williams in 14th place.
Tomorrow’s race takes place at 4:00 PM EST and we’ll see if Verstappen can finish the weekend with a perfect record here in Miami. Full qualifying results below.
