President Donald Trump has said that the United States’ recent military operations in Venezuela should not be seen as a precedent for China to take action against Taiwan, arguing that the situation is fundamentally different and that China will not act against Taiwan while Venezuela is in office.
In an interview with the New York Times published on January 8, President Trump rejected suggestions that the U.S. detention and deportation of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro could embolden Chinese leader Xi Jinping to change the status quo on Taiwan or justify other territorial disputes.
