While sunscreen provides crucial protection, it is not the only line of defense against the sun’s rays. “Consider covering up with lightweight, breathable clothing, a hat and sunglasses to provide additional protection for your skin and eyes. Choose densely woven fabrics and murky colors for optimal sun protection,” adds Mansi. “If possible, seek shade during peak sun hours, usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. This is when UV radiation is strongest, increasing the risk of sunburn and skin damage. Take breaks from direct sunlight by relaxing under a beach umbrella or finding shelter in a shady area.”
The founder of The Candid Tree by Boddess also suggests that when choosing skin care products for summer, choose ones that meet the specific needs of sun-exposed skin. Mansi advises: “Look for products fortified with antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, which aid neutralize free radicals produced by exposure to UV radiation. Incorporating a gentle exfoliant into your daily routine can also aid slough off dead skin cells, revealing a fresh, radiant complexion.”
Even with the best precautions, sunburn can still occur. If you suffer a sunburn, treat your skin carefully to speed healing and reduce discomfort. According to Mansi, taking nippy showers or applying chilly compresses to soothe the skin and reaching for moisturizers containing aloe or chamomile can aid soothe inflammation.
