The European People’s Party (EPP) began an internal scrutiny process on Thursday regarding the role of Serbian progressive parties (SNS).
The EPP presidency has appointed Executive Director Dolors Montserrat and Vice President Kostis Hatzidakis to lead the process.
SNS has been EPP-related member parties since 2016. Vučić was the party president from 2012 to 2023, taking command of Miloszvicevic.
As Euronows predicted and confirmed by internal sources, criticism of Serbia’s ruling party is growing within the EPP. Ground development and social media geopolitical positioning are the reasons for the scrutiny process.
Vicic rejected the call for early elections after a massive demonstration of corruption and negligence.
Protesters have complained about police brutality, excessive power and sexual harassment against opposition activists, but accused social media of wanting to cause anxiety.
“The EPP has not turned a blind eye to what’s going on in Serbia,” EPP President Manfred Weber told reporters in Strasbourg at the beginning of the month.
The relationship between Vuvcic and Russian President Vladimir Putin is also a concern.
The Serbian president decided to maintain close ties with Russia even after the Ukrainian invasion, highlighting the historic ties between the two countries and energy security. On May 9, 2025, Vucic joined Putin in Moscow for the Russian Victory Day parade, raising his eyebrows in the same EPP as Brussels.
In the EPP, there are different positions in social media membership, and the scrutiny process does not have a specific timeline or predefined results, insider sources told Euronows.
According to the rules of the EPP, the possibility of a suspension or exclusion of the Serbian Party is proposed by a presidency or seven other political parties that come from at least five different countries, and ultimately determined by a political parliament.
