At least four people, including children, have been killed after Russia unleashed a barrage of drones and missiles overnight on Sunday, targeting the capital Kiev, which is the brunt of the attack.
This is the first major artillery fire to target the Ukrainian capital since last month’s air campaign killed nearly two dozen people.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv city administration, confirmed the victims on Sunday through his official telegram channel. Tkachenko also announced that at least 10 people were injured in the attack.
The 12-year-old girl was among the dead. Thick black smoke could be seen rising from the explosion near the city centre.
“The Russians have resumed the counters for the death of children,” Tkachenko wrote in Telegram.
Ukrainian President Voldy Mie Zelensky denounced the “savage strike” in a post on X, with the massive attacks containing nearly 500 strike drones and more than 40 missiles.
“The main targets of enemy strikes were Kiev and the region, Zaporidia, Kumernitsky, Sammy, Mikolife, Chernihib and Odesa regions,” Zelensky wrote.
“As of now, four people have been reportedly killed in Kiev, including a 12-year-old girl. All my family and loved ones have my opinion of my sad dol. In Ukraine, at least 40 people have been known to have been injured, including children,” he continued.
Zelenskyy noted that ordinary places like bread production facilities and tire manufacturing plants are among those targeted for attacks.
Russian missiles also attacked civilian and residential buildings. Zelenskyy says emergency teams are responding to the scene and providing the assistance and care needed to all victims.
Ukrainian leaders accused the Kremlin of intentionally targeting civilians to incite fear and fear. He also accused Moscow of making a statement in the attack following a wave of criticism received during the UN General Assembly (UNGA) High Level Week, which was closed on Saturday.
“This sleazy attack essentially occurred as the end of the week of the UN General Assembly. This is exactly how Russia declares its true position. Moscow wants to continue fighting and killing, and deserves the harshest pressure from the world.”
Zelenskyy says that as long as Russia continues to generate funds from energy sales, it will “benefit from continuing this war.” He also vowed to continue fighting back to reduce Moscow’s military power.
“The Kremlin will benefit from continuing this war and fear as long as it earns revenue from energy and runs a shadow fleet. We will continue to fight back to steal those revenue streams from Russia and force it towards diplomacy,” Zelensky said.
The Ukrainian president urged his allies to pressure Moscow to suffocate their funds. He also called on the world to keep an eye on President Donald Trump’s plan to force Russia to the negotiation table and end their full-scale invasion until the fourth year.
“Anyone who wants peace must support President Trump’s efforts and halt Russian imports. The time for decisive action has been long behind.”
The Ukrainian leader, who recently returned from the US after participating in the annual UNGA, says he expects Kiev to have a strong response to these attacks from Washington, Europe, the G7 and G20.
