Starting a business is a dream for many, but requires training, guidance and initial spending. In Spain, entrepreneurs are available to access a variety of financial assistance programs. Some people are targeting women in particular to address unique challenges and promote gender equality in business.

According to the Gem España 2023-24 report, there are currently more than 650,000 female entrepreneurs in Spain. Below is an overview of key financial aid and programs designed to support female entrepreneurs.

Tarifa Plan for Self-Employed Workers

Since 2023, Spain has provided a decline in social security contribution rate of 80 euros per month for self-employed workers known as the “Tarifa Plan.” In areas such as Madrid and Andalusia, this fee has been reduced to zero, making it easier for women to start their business without putting an immediate financial burden.

Business Support Program for Women (Pem)

Managed by the Las Mujeres Institute, Paem provides support tailored to female entrepreneurs, providing guidance, business creation support, and helping with fundraising and guarantees. The program is ideal for women who are facing difficulties in accessing the capital they need, or for those who need strategic advice to launch or grow a venture.

The European Award for Innovative Women

The female innovators at the European Innovation Council celebrate the women behind groundbreaking innovation. Prizes range from 20,000 to 100,000 euros, recognizing and financially supporting women who drive existing pioneering businesses across Europe.

Support to obtain financial guarantees

Avalmadrid and Avalis are mutual guarantors companies (SGRs). Instituto de Las Mujeres offers a bonus of up to 800 euros per project to cover guaranteed costs.

Country women’s challenge

The scheme, co-funded by the European Social Fund, supports women in rural areas by supporting entrepreneurship and innovation. It provides resources to start and consolidate businesses to improve the competitiveness of the rural economy.

Innovatia 8.3

Innovatia 8.3 is a collaboration between the Las Mujeres Institute and the Santiago de Santiago de Compostela Universidade, supporting women in academia to launch a science-based startup, providing visibility and resources to turn research into a viable business.

Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE)

With support from the US Embassy, AWE offers a two-month program with masterclasses, mentoring and online training through Arizona State University’s DreamBuilder Initiative.

NEOTEC Program

CDTI-managed NEOTEC will fund high-tech-based startups with a 2024 budget of 2 million euros, book at least 5 million euros for women-led projects, promoting innovation and technology differentiation.

Along with general community assistance, these programs provide female entrepreneurs with financial relief, training and networking opportunities, overcome barriers and help the dynamic entrepreneurs succeed in the landscape of Spain.
