A federal judge dismissed the Trump administration’s lawsuit against Illinois’ sanctuary policy on July 25, finding that the policy does not violate federal law or is not protected by state sovereignty.
The administration’s lawsuit filed in February alleges that Illinois, the city of Chicago and Cook counties were each implementing policies that illegally obstructed federal immigration enforcement. By restricting information flow to federal authorities, the administration argued that these policies contradict immigration and nationality laws and entered the federal powers unconstitutional.
