Films by Jose Luis Guerin, Alberto Rodriguez and Jose Mari Goneaga Aitor Arregi is one of the 17 Spanish features that have been selected for the 2025 San Sebastian International Film Festival (SSIFF) starting in September. 19–27.
Gerin’s functional documentary A story of a good valley I’m watching the director return 24 years after winning the festival’s special juju Award Under construction. The Spanish-French co-production documented the outskirts of Barcelona, where different generations of immigrants coexist.
The fourth competition in the main section is Basque filmmakers Jose Mali Gonaga and Eitaareregi Masparomaabout an older gay man who has to go back to San Sebastian to live in his past, daughter, and an elderly man who hides his homosexuality. Goenaga and Arregi are part of the creative trio Moriarti, which includes Jon Garaño. Their previous features, MarcoIt premiered last year at Orizonti in Venice.
The third Spanish competition title is Tigersplayed by experienced genre director Alberto Rodriguez and thrillers about sisters and siblings Barbara Renee and Antonio de la Torre.
What’s out of the competition for official choices is She walks in the darknessfeatures inspired by the true story of a young officer who infiltrated the Basque terrorist group ETA.
Tigers‘Director Alberto Rodriguez will also premiere the miniseries Anatomy of the momentBased on Javier Sercas’ book about the military’s attempts in the 1981 Spanish coup.
SSIFF’s official selection also includes a special screening of the thriller series by Koldo Almandoz Empty Mouth; Drama from the era of Asier Altuna Carmele;documentary Antonio’s Flowertwo-time San Sebastian Golden Shell winners Isaki Racus Esta and Elena Morina. And the series destinyPaco Plaza and Pablo Guerrero.
The new director, dedicated to the first and second works, will premiere the debut feature by Basque filmmaker Irati Gorostidi Agirretxe A new eraand the second feature of Jose Arallon, Live dance.
Perlak section, selection of titles premiered on the international circuit includes the Spanish-French co-production of Guillermo Galoe A city where you can’t sleepCannes Critics ‘Prix SACD winner in Week.
SSIFF has also announced two entries in the Horizontes Latinos section featuring Spanish Latin America co-production. Flamingo’s mysterious gaze, Director Chile Diego Cespedes won the United Nations Certain Respect Award at Cannes.
The second feature included is message It was one of the WIP Latam projects in San Sebastian last year from the Argentine Filmmaker Ivan Fund, which won the Juju Award in Berlin.
