Elon Musk has left his government role as a top advisor to US President Donald Trump after leading efforts to reduce and overhaul federal bureaucracy under the newly created Office of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
His departure was announced Wednesday evening in a post on his own social media platform, X (formerly Twitter).
The billionaire entrepreneur struggled in the unfamiliar environment of Washington, accomplishing far less than he originally wanted.
He reduced the target of dramatically reducing government spending from $2 trillion (1.78 trillion euros) to $1 trillion (889 million euros), and another $150 billion (13.3 billion euros). He also frequently expresses frustration about increased resistance to Doge’s operation.
Sometimes he clashed with other top members of the Trump administration. The Trump administration struggled with the newcomers’ efforts to rebuild their divisions and faced a fierce political blow due to his efforts.
The role of Musk working for Trump is always intended to be temporary, and he has recently made its notice that he will turn his attention to running his business, including electric car maker Tesla, rocket company SpaceX, and social media platforms.
However, administrative authorities were often vague about when Musk retreated from his position at Doge.
In a post in the announcement on X, Musk thanked Trump for his appointment as a “special government employee” and for his pursuit of reducing what he calls “vain government spending.” He also added that Doge will continue its mission regardless of his departure.
“Doge Mission will be strengthened over time as it will become a government-wide lifestyle,” Musk writes.
Musk announced his decision the day after CBS released some of the interview. He criticized Trump’s central legislative agenda by saying he was “disappointed” by what the president calls his “big beautiful bill.”
The law combines tax cuts with increased immigration enforcement. Musk described it as a “large spending bill” that would increase the federal deficit and “damage the “work” known as the Doge” of his ministry of government efficiency.
“I think the bill will grow, or maybe it would be beautiful,” Musk said. “But I don’t know if it’s both.”
The masks were previously energised by the opportunity to rebuild Washington. After placing at least $250 million (222 million euros) on Trump’s candidacy.
He was often generous in wearing Trump’s Magazine (which makes America great again) in the White House, holding his own campaign rallies, and praise Trump.
“The more I know President Trump, the more I like that guy,” Musk said in February. “Frankly, I love him.”
But Washington’s bureaucracy appears to have diminished his patience as he expressed the struggle to actually bring about change to the US media.
“The situation in federal bureaucracy is far worse than I noticed,” Musk said. “I thought there was a problem, but to say the least, I’m sure it’s a tough fight to improve things in DC.”
Musk announced last week that he plans to take a step back from politics, saying he will spend a significant amount of money to support future candidates.
