In this edition of screenThe Cannes Close-up Interview Series, UK producer and executive Daniel Batzek recalls his favorite Cannes deals and how he took pride in attending the party without an invitation.
Batzek, a British-born based in New York, wore “two hats” in the year of Cannes. As the president of a newly appointed film at the Lincoln Centre and as chairman of film London, representing the interests of British films.
Battsek, who was former chairman of Film4 after a senior position at Cohen Media Group, National Geographic, Miramax, Disney and Palace Pictures, is a true Cannes veteran.
In his favorite deal at Croisette, he said, “I have allowed my heart to control my head.
One was from Julian Schnabel Diving bells and butterflies. “I fell in love with it (and) the rest of that Cannes chased after Julian Schnabel, a person who’s hard to chase. I ended up signing a movie.”
In the interview, Battsek also talks about his favorite Cannes celebrity encounters (he wasn’t from the film world) and why he wasn’t tempted by Petit Majestic on his walk to the hotel.
