Japan’s TOEI is to handle international sales of Keishi Otomo’s mystery thriller Heroes Island And they will launch a film at the upcoming Cannes Market.
The epic for over three hours traces the lives of groups of outlaws and outsiders in Okinawa for 20 years, from the postwar period, when the island chain finally returned to Japan by the United States in 1972 until the 1970s.
The cast is led by Tsumabuki, who won Best Actor at the Japan Academy Awards for Ishikawa Kei in 2023. manIt also features Suzu Hiros, who will be appearing in Ishikawa’s upcoming Cannes competition titles. A pale view of the hill.
The ensemble cast also includes Masataka Kubota, who won the best supporting actor of Japan Academy manand Hirokazu Coreda’s Cannes 2023 Award winner Eita Peace Monster.
Director Otomo is best known for his series of films based on samurai cartoons Rurouni Kenshin, The film is based on Junjo Shindo’s 2018 novel and won the Japanese Naoki Literary Award.
The film is produced by Toei and Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan and is scheduled for a local release on September 19th.
Director Otomo said making the film was a multi-year effort and delayed several times due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Otomo is also the director of upcoming manga adaptations for Netflix 10danceIt is scheduled to debut on streaming platforms in December this year.
