How can the EU fix medicines shortages? Radio Schuman

On Tuesday, the committee will present new proposals for key drug laws. This means that the first executives of that mission will take priority.

How can the EU fix the dramatic shortage of critical medications that put patients at risk? The European Commission will present the “Critical Drug Act” on Tuesday to address shortages of antibiotics, insulin and painkillers (particularly), reduce dependence on Asia and improve the resilience of supply chains across Europe.

The block relies on Asia for 60-80% of its supply and is vulnerable to disruption. Some countries propose that medical shortages are integrated into EU defence spending and viewed as a national security issue.

Today, Radio Schumann jumps into the proposal with Euronews health reporter Marta Ilraora.

The episode also discusses elections in Greenland, a semi-autonomous island that attracted international attention after President Donald Trump insisted he wanted to buy the island.

Finally, we will look at gang violence across the EU, especially when it is related to drug competition in countries such as Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Germany and France.

Radio Schuman is hosted by Maïade La Baume and audio-edited by production assistants Eleonora Vasques and David Brodheim. Music by Alexandre Jass.
