For example, seeing the Colosseum and Sydney Opera House in Rome is cheap at the moment for Americans. Because purchases made in local currency are weighted favorably by us.
Seasonality and supply and demand affect the value of your destination (Paris can be more expensive during the Olympics, while shoulder season can offer some trades), but strong dollars can get smaller amounts. So we spoke with industry experts to find out where travelers can get the best value from their formula.
Peru
“Now is the perfect time to consider visiting Peru,” says Melissa Da Silva, president of Trafalgar Tours North America. “Not only can travelers expect to spend $10 on great food, they can also expect its mild climate and incredible wonders. Machu Picchu is not a historic site for Miss, but I would add that Peru can see more than ancient Inca ruins. Michael Holtz, founder and CEO of SmartFlyer, agrees: “South American countries such as Argentina, Peru and Colombia are known for their diverse landscapes, cultural riches and exceptional hospitality at more accessible prices, both on the trip and on the ground.”

Thailand
“Whenever there is strength in the US dollar, it’s an ideal time to go to Europe,” says Anne Chamberlain, travel advisor for Frosch, Chase’s business and luxury travel division. But she encourages travelers to look beyond that too. “One other favorite, more affordable destination I would like to recommend to clients is Thailand. There are priced luxury five-star resorts (for $200), and it’s easy to find the best place to stay without breaking the bank. “The US dollar is particularly strong at this point, offering a close to 1:1 exchange with the euro,” says Holtz. “This preferred exchange rate is combined with numerous new hotel openings, especially in Italy and France, increasing European travel on the horizon in 2024.” He said, “Because travelers can enjoy the comfort of all creatures in the Mediterranean summer, but can enjoy the comfort of all creatures for a longer period.”
Steve Born, chief marketing officer at Globus Travel Brands (Globus, Cosmos, Avalon Waterways), said he also sees great opportunities in Europe, with the euro moving further in Eastern and Southern Europe than in the western region. He recommends that Croatia and Greece give better value in restaurants and hotels. “Cities like Dubrovnik overlooking the blue waters of the Adriatic Sea not only hosts exceptional UNESCO World Heritage Sites, charming and historic streets, medieval attractions, but also offer far fewer pricing at Croatian accommodation than in other parts of Europe,” he says.
Passalak, Lake Italian Como
Napoleon Bonaparte, Winston Churchill and composer Vincenzo Bellini are guests of the neoclassical villa Passalacca on Lake Como, and was added to Earth’s Best Hotel on the 2023 list long before it was reborn as this exquisite 24-suite hotel.
Pa.te.os, Allentejo, Portugal
Another AFAR’s best hotel of 2023, Brutalist Pa.te.os was designated by Lisbon biology star Manuel Aires Mateus, and placed the guest focus on the Alentejo landscape.
Le Grand Mazarin, Paris, France
Those who want to be in one of the hipest parts of Paris, which loves colour and beautiful boring, will feel at home in the chic excavations of Le Grand Mazarin at LeMallée.
Hotel Excelsior Dubrovnik, Dubrovnik, Croatia
